Gunnar B.J. Andersson, MD, PhD
Gunnar B.J. Andersson, MD, PhD, is The Ronald L. DeWald, MD Professor and Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He was chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery from 1994 to 2008. Dr. Andersson has been at the forefront of spine surgery research and education for more than 30 years. He is a member of 17 editorial boards, editor-in- chief of Spinal News International, a deputy editor for Spine, founding editor of Contemporary Spine Surgery and an associate editor of Clinical Biomechanics. He is the author of over 360 original publications, 170 books and book chapters and 555 abstracts. His focus has been spinal disorders. Dr. Andersson is a past president of the Orthopaedic Research Society, the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine, International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery and the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians.
Kenneth L. Cameron, PhD, MPH, ATC
Kenneth Cameron, PhD, MPH, ATC, currently serves as the Director of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Research at Keller Army Hospital, West Point, New York, where he holds faculty appointments with the John A. Feagin Jr. Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship and the US Army-Baylor University Sports Physical Therapy Doctoral Program. Dr. Cameron also serves as a Professor in the Departments of Surgery and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Oregon State University in 1993, his Master of Arts Degree in Exercise Science from San Jose State University in 1996, and Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees from the University at Albany in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Dr. Cameron also completed a Master of Public Health Degree from The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2011. Dr. Cameron’s primary research interests are in the areas of injury prevention, musculoskeletal injury and disease epidemiology, and outcomes associated with the treatment of these injuries, specifically in physically active and military populations. He also has specific research interests in knee and ankle injuries, shoulder instability, biomarkers associated with post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and sports related concussion.
Dr. Cameron was competitively selected to participate in the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade Young Investigator’s Initiative in 2007 and he has subsequently obtained research funding support as a principal investigator from The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, The National Athletic Trainers’ Association Research and Education Foundation, and The U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command’s Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury Research, Peer Reviewed Medical Research, and Peer Reviewed Orthopaedic Research programs, respectively. He has also obtained research funding through the Military Operational Medicine Research Program (JPC-5). Dr. Cameron has also obtained research funding support as a co-investigator/site principal investigator on projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIAMS) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Dr. Cameron currently serves as the site principal investigator for the NCAA-DoD funded Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium research activities at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Dr. Cameron has authored over 100 peer reviewed manuscripts and has presented his work nationally and internationally.
Dr. Cameron earned the Commander’s Award for Civilian Service in recognition of exemplary service to the United States Military Academy in 2004 and the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Award in 2014. Dr. Cameron’s work has resulted in several research awards. These awards include the Arthritis Foundation’s New Investigator Award (2010), The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health MPH Capstone Research Award (2011), the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons Founders’ Award for the best scientific paper with military relevance (2011), the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine Research Award for the Best Scientific Research Paper presented at the AMSSM annual meeting (2013), and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine’s Best Scientific Poster Award (2011), Aircast Award (2013, 2014, 2015) for the Best Clinical Science Paper submitted by a sports medicine fellow, and O’Donoghue Award (2012) for the best overall paper which deals with clinical based research or human in-vivo research. In 2015 Dr. Cameron earned designation as a Fellow in the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (FNATA) for exemplary scholarship and service and in 2017 he earned the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer (MDAT) award recognizing exemplary professional service at the district and national levels. Dr. Cameron also earned the United States Sports Academy Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award in 2017.

Haley A. Bookbinder, PA-S, MEd, ATC is currently attending Bryant University’s Physician Assistant Program in Rhode Island. Haley completed her Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Training at Springfield College in 2016. She also completed a Master’s of Education Degree in Post-Professional Athletic Training at the University of Virginia in 2017. While at UVA, she completed a master’s thesis on “Return to Play Following ACL Reconstruction”. Haley worked for The Geneva Foundation at West Point Military Academy as a Program Manager from 2018-2019 where she participated mainly in concussion and ACL research. Miriam Cisternas, MA, has over 25 years of experience researching the epidemiology and cost of chronic diseases through innovative use of primary and secondary data sources. Her specific experience in the musculoskeletal area includes more than ten years of analytic support to the CDC Arthritis Program, where she provided technical assistance and training to Program staff and as served as co-PI and principal analyst on a number of research studies. She has also analyzed clinical trial data for lupus treatments and served as the epidemiologist and analyst for the California Lupus Surveillance Project. Earlier in her career, Ms. Cisternas managed longitudinal panels of chronic disease patients (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome). Aimee Hersh, MD, received her medical degree from Brown Medical School and completed her residency and clinical fellowship in Pediatric Rheumatology at University of California, San Francisco. Jonathan Kirschner MD is from and currently lives in New York City. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, Electrodiagnostic Medicine and is a registered musculoskeletal sonographer. He is an Associate Attending Physiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he serves as Fellowship Director for the Interventional Spine and Musculoskeletal Medicine and Sports Medicine fellowships. He sees patients with neck, low back and radicular pain, osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, sports injuries and performs sonographic and fluoroscopic guided injections. Lt. Col Christopher LeBrun, MD
Colonel Christopher LeBrun, MD is an instructor at the United States Air Force Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (C-STARS) at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. Dr. LeBrun serves as an orthopaedic traumatologist and an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, chair of the military committee for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association and is a past president of the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has produced numerous trauma related research publications with multiple podium presentations and is currently actively involved with numerous funded and unfunded collaborative studies to improve outcomes for extremity wounds. Anna N. Miller, MD, FAAOS, FACS, FAOA, is a Vice Chair for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Division at Washington University School of Medicine. Gudrun E. Mirick Mueller, MD, is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at Hennepin County Medical Center and an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Minnesota. Kern Singh, MD completed his fellowship at Emory University, he joined the faculty at Rush University Medical Center in 2005 where he is currently a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. In 2013, Dr. Singh was appointed as the co-director of the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute at Rush. This institute focuses on the utilization of minimally invasive procedures in the treatment of degenerative spinal disorders. The practice is a large, multidisciplinary practice representing all orthopedic subspecialties. Annually, Dr. Singh performs over 300 minimally invasive procedures including spinal fusions and decompressions in both the cervical and lumbar regions. William G Ward Sr., MD, is an orthopedic surgeon practicing in Winston Salem, NC where he is the local Musculoskeletal Service Line Leader for Novant Health. Dr. Ward is a Past President of the North American Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS). He completed Duke Medical School in 1978, orthopedic residency at Duke in 1989 and an orthopedic oncology fellowship at UCLA in 1991. Sylvia I. Watkins-Castillo, PhD, has served as coordinator, primary analyst, and support author for the Burden of Musculoskeletal Diseases project since 2006, when work on the first print edition began. Prior to accepting this work on a contractual basis, she spent six years as the Research and Data Manager at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Rosemont, IL. Before going to AAOS, Sylvia worked as a consultant/planner and research analyst for the public, non-profit, and private sectors. Projects included a broad range of topics, and addressed feasibility studies, strategic planning, needs assessments, evidence-based medicine, best practices, customer satisfaction, benchmarking, program evaluation, market characteristics, and competitor analysis. She received her doctorate in social psychology and research methodology from Iowa State University.
Stuart Weinstein, MD, is the Ignacio V. Ponseti Chair and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Iowa. Dr. Weinstein received his A.B. Honors degree in Political Science and History from the University of Illinois, his medical degree (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the University of Iowa, interned in Internal Medicine at the University of California - San Francisco, and completed his orthopaedic residency at University of Iowa. He is an NIH funded researcher, and has published more than 230 scientific articles in peer review journals (including the NEJM, JAMA, The Lancet, Nature) on a wide variety of pediatric orthopaedic conditions. His research work has focused on spinal deformity in children, children’s hip and foot problems, and the natural history and long-term outcome of pediatric musculoskeletal conditions. He has edited three major textbooks — The Pediatric Spine: Principles and Practice; Lovell and Winter's Pediatric Orthopaedics; Turek's Orthopaedics. His many contributions to orthopaedics have been recognized by his receipt of numerous awards for distinguished achievement, service, leadership, and the advancement of orthopaedics and research, by national and foreign orthopaedic societies. Nicole C. Wright, PhD, MPH, is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She received a Master of Public Health in 2005 and Doctorate of Philosophy in Epidemiology in 2010 from the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on musculoskeletal epidemiology, particularly the distribution, determinants, and outcomes of osteoporosis and fragility fractures, and disparities in osteoporosis management and outcomes using data ranging from the nationwide Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study to administrative claims data of the US Medicare system. She has published numerous papers in prestigious bone and scientific journals, served as the principal investigator and co-investigators on federal research projects grants and industry-sponsored research contracts, and serves the musculoskeletal community on various advisory boards and expert workgroups.
Se Won Lee, MD, is a graduate of Catholic University of Korea, College of Medicine and received residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He is a former associate professor, founding director of Sports Medicine fellowship program and director of Rehabilitation Medicine Electrodiagnostic Laboratory at Montefiore/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Lee is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports medicine and Neuromuscular medicine.
Edward Yelin, PhD, has been on the faculty of the Division of Rheumatology and Philip R Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies at UCSF since 1980. Dr. Yelin is perhaps best known for his work on employment among persons with arthritis and other chronic diseases. A second major thread to his research concerns studies of the impact of changes in the health care system on persons with arthritis. Finally he has been involved in studies documenting the economic and social impacts of chronic disease and disability. As part of this research, he authored the chapter in several volumes of The Burden of Musculoskeletal Disease in the United States (BMUS) on the economic impact of these conditions. He now serves as Co-Chair of the on-going BMUS project.
